Thank you Mr Tesco

I did my normal run into Pontardawe last night and to kill the hour I took myself off to tesco, a slow mooch round in the warm.

I found some tomatoes reduced to 20 p per pack and scooped them up. Packs of 3 peppers and some button mushrooms all reduced by 90%. Cue a light bulb moment.

This morning I prepped these,

3 trays of small plum toms and 1 of larger vine toms. 3 small red onions peeled, 3 red peppers, all just chopped up roughly, 8 large cloves garlic, peeled and left whole.
I cut some Thyme, Oregano and Lemon Thyme from the garden and pulled the leaves off and scattered over. Then a generous drizzle of rapeseed oil and a stir round. Into a 200 c oven for 40 minutes, then turn heat off and leave for around 30 minutes.

They should be cooked and soft but still holding their shape, into a bowl and blitz.

I took this down quite fine, you can see the tomato seeds, I could have pushed this through a sieve but do not mind some texture. Like wise I do not waste time skinning hot house tomatoes and peppers, the skins are very thin and disappear.

Scraped into 6 freezer containers, each pot has over 200 g of purree. Once frozen I will decant, wrap each block and then pack into a freezer bag. Saves space and means that I do not have hundreds of plastic boxes.

I was not tempted to buy the cakes and cookies that were reduced, I had an amazing dinner before going out and was not interested.
The recipe and pics will be on the recipe blog shortly.

I have finished quilting the big beast and am halfway through tying and sewing the thread ends in...a tedious job but one that I am compelled to do.

More washing on the line at least the forecast is good for the next few days.

Back to the beast then.

    1. I like to keep a supply of this type of purree in the freezer, it does as a base for pizza, make soup and gives oomph to any casserole.

  2. They look so tasty and what bargains! Just the thing for the winter months xx

  3. Such a good idea when you can pick tomatoes up at that price. Looking forward to seeing the finished beast.

  5. Was talking about you this morning and saying you are the most frugal person out there with food and the dishes you make from next to nothing :-)

    1. I had a good teacher, for me it is not so much about frugality as seeing a bargain and then seeing what I can do with it. I have to keep my eyes averted for a little while as both freezers are full.

  6. Great bargains and I love what you've done with them. You were so good not being tempted by the reduced cakes.

  7. I had never thought of taking things out of the plastic containers after they have frozen, what a good idea. My freezer is crammed full of the flipping boxes!

    1. I couldn't have put this better myself!!! I was thinking if I lined the boxes with a bit of cling film first it might make removal a bit easier!

    2. I do normally line the tubs with cling film, this time I was just in a hurry. If you take the boxes out of the freezer and leave for a few minutes they empty easily, I just invert them onto cling film and tap and shake.

  8. That sounds like a good starter base for chili. I'd brown my cubed beef and then add that and some fire roasted tomatoes, some Ortega's, and ground ancho, ground chipotle, and cumin. Let it go in the slow cooker for about 6 hours and a good hearty dinner, sided with corn bread. Not tonight, it's 37C here at 1400.
I've heard rumors that Tesco is thinking of coming to our little corner of the US coast. Their Fresh and Easy stores didn't do as well as they hoped.

    1. I use several different dried chillies, never heard of Ortega's, I like to use a wide variety of seasoning. Tesco is struggling now that the "stigma" of shopping in budget supermarkets has all but gone. Aldi and Lidl are on a roll.

    2. Ortega is a mild green chili that can be found chopped or whole in cans. It's not a spicy chile to my taste, my son loves jalapenos, I fear for his intestines. LOL> . Aldi's is coming to CA also. I said in my other comment today that it's 28, no, it's 38. and miserable.

  9. Your tomato mixture looked delicious right on the baking trays. I would have loved to have scooped it up onto a pizza shell with a little cheese and enjoyed!! Looking forward to seeing the quilt!

    1. I do trays of it and use whole in lots of ways, straight onto a slice of sough dough toast is great. It is very good straight off the tray onto a spoon ;-)
