A finish and a half.

Do you remember that me saying that I was making giant Yorkshire Pudding for dinner, well it turned out supersized.

Almost 4" tall, I could not eat it all luckily Ben loves Yorkies and had almost half of it. Not all at once, I split it over two days dinner for him.

My chunky jumper is done, I tried it on and almost melted so it is on the model now.

I love the neck and will be making it again, possibly twice, in different colours.

Then there is the half. After the bright red socks I decided to give my eyes a rest.

The same basic pattern, better wool and calmer colours. I made the cuff twice as deep and added a few extra rows of SS before shaping the heel. This pair is to order and there are another three pairs requested. I will have to wait for my bright pairs, but I am happy to do so for a little while. The second sock is on the needles and will possibly be finished tonight.

Meanwhile there is a pair of long moccasin style socks in the book that I love, I will be getting the yarn for them on Tuesday, unless of course I can not wait that long. After all it is only a 30 minute trip to Llandeilo and there is always the ice cream shop......

I will be sewing again over the weekend, first I need to wind some bobbins, I Hate That Job with a passion. It means unthreading my machine or moving all my sewing about to set up another machine just for the task. I get through a lot of bobbins, often 20 in a week.

I looked online for a bobbin winder but could only find a battery operated one. I saw problems with loose wound bobbins as the batteries lost their power.
After careful thought and consideration I looked for prewound bobbins, found some and have ordered a small box. The deciding factor is that they hold much more thread than my machine will wind onto each. That will save me time and the cost is not prohibitive. I will let you know how I get on with them.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a way of just loading a spool of thread for the bottom stitch in exactly the same way as the top stitch.

The sun has come out to play this morning, although there was a very light sprinkle of rain a while ago.

My cabinet has arrived and is lovely, now I just have to decide what to put in it.
I emptied the book shelves that were in the corner and have 2 bags full to take to the library. They sell them 4 for a £1 and the money helps to cover costs, it is totally self funded and does not get money from any other source.

I am off now, I have a shopping trip arranged and am on chauffeur duty.
Have a good weekend, fingers crossed for sun shine.

  3. WOW....to that yorkie....it's fabulous.
    Beautiful jumper....I love the colours.
I have to ask....do you think we might be twins seperated at birth...lol. We both both like 1950's diners and we both hate winding bobbins. I have been wondering for ages if you can get a machine where the bottom thread can be pulled straight from a spool.
    Have a fab shopping trip-x-

    1. It could be possible, a machine like that would be top of the best sellers list. I wonder why it has not happened, when you think about the early machines to today's starter machines. It is almost like the first motor car to space travel.

  5. What a whopper of a Yorkshire pud. I'm not surprised it took a few days to eat. Great jumper and socks. I wish I could get the enthusiasm for sock making. My attempts are only half hearted. I'm going to try on a small circular sock needle next time I attempt a pair.

    1. I am knitting these socks flat on 2 needles, they are so easy and I am quite hooked.

  6. Pam - looks like you are having fun! Simplicity makes the side winder bobbin winder and it has a power cord, or can run of AA batteries if you are away from electricity.

    1. I will have a look for it, the only ones that I saw on my first look were battery only.

    1. My Pudding recipe is simple. 6 0z plain flour and a pinch of salt. 3 larger eggs and enough milk and water to reach a double cream consistency, around 1/4 pint I think. Put the eggs into the flour and add half the liquid, beat like crazy with a balloon whisk, then whisk in the rest of the liquid till it reaches the right consistency. That amount makes 3 giant Yorkies in 8" tins.

  8. In the 1970's Singer produced the Touch And Sew machine that would the bobbins in the bobbin case. But from what I've heard of them they were just as much headache to operate - flip this lever, move this button, wind the thread this way not that.... Probably needed to read the book every time you wound it. And the bobbins were weird and a specialty item, not available in all stores. Also expensive - I had to order some for a customer a year or so ago. I just use a neutral thread in the bobbin, and wind a dozen at once.

    1. Oh Yes, I remember that, there was a demonstration in the fabric shop in Norwich. My Mum and I went and it looked so complicated, the woman doing the demo was struggling with it.

  9. Prewound bobbins are new to me. They could be very useful. That jumper is just lovely. The neckline looks so comfortable and stylish.

  10. Wow that yorkshire is a whopper. Your jumper is lovely. Our local library is set o close in September but there is a group looking into ways of keeping it open. Selling books sounds like a good idea but we will have to wait and see.

    1. Our library has a craft fair 2 or 3 times a year as well. They have a table for donated books just inside the door, 4 for £1. Every now and then they have a bag and book sale, a few of us make simple tote bags up from CS curtains and they are sold for £1. It is amazing how many people come just to buy the bags, most stop and buy a book or two as well.

  11. That is one HECK of a Yorkshire! My goodness, it nearly deserves a plughole for the gravy!

If you like icecream, you will have to try the new place in Carmarthen (down the bottom of Jackson's Cut, which is off King Street). Tam bought me an icecream today - we decided to go for two flavours. My goodness, he PILED it high and there must have been enough icecream to fill a Ben and Jerry's carton. It was all we could do to finish it - and LOVELY ice cream it was too.

    1. How could you tell me that, I don't know Carmarthen very well at all but I will be looking for this on my next visit. On my last trip to the shop in Llandeilo I had Eton Mess and she scraped out the container. I could not eat it all but it was gorgeous.
