Just a quickie

I just wanted to pop in and say hello. I didn't go to knit and  today as it is Fran's last day in Wales this visit. We went to Llanelli this morning as she had to return her rental car and the traffic was not quite horrendous but bad enough.

My socks are off the needles and I have started the first sleeve of the Flax sweater for the SO.

These are knitted with Knit Picks Stroll in Tropical with heels and toes in Drops Fabel. I have 65 grams of the Stroll left and Fran has requested some shorty socks as well. There will be enough for 2 pairs with contrast heels and toes. Bargain.

I have the bodice of another dress finished, I added a full lining and have the skirt to finish and attach, that will have to wait as the rest of the week is full.

This has a gathered skirt, or at least it will have, and should have an elasticated waist but I have shortened the bodice and removed some of the bulk and will wear it with a belt. The gathers at the yoke front do away with the need for bust darts and even with my pruning it will be a loose and comfy wear for hot summer days. fingers crossed that I will wear it often.

I have another day out on Thursday, I am off to see a fellow blogger for some crafty, yarny chat. I have 3 sock patterns to take, all with different heels, as she has asked for a little bit of help. I am always ready to talk knitting and socks in particular.
I do feel a bit of a fraud though as I am still to try my hand at the Fish Lips Kiss or a German short row heel. They are on my list but first I want to knit socks toe up. One of my birthday presents, from Fran, was a copy of Cast On Bind Off by Leslie Ann Bestor. This has some lovely illustrated things for me to try. I quite enjoy the Kitchener stitch to close toes and afterthought heels but am looking forward to experimenting.

Now I need to go, there is Lamb to roast, apple crumble to prepare and Bara Brith to bake. Fran likes to take some home baking back and her loaf will be sliced and frozen to be enjoyed over a few weeks. I do make a yeast version as we all like that the most.

  3. I love the socks. In the fall and winter, I try to find colorful socks to life my spirits. When I worked for the government we could only wear navy or black socks, but sometimes I would cheat and have socks with ornamentation around the top, where no one could see them.

  6. Any chance you would share your recipe for Bara Brith? I loved it when I was in Wales, but haven't been able to find a recipe that compares, but of course sitting in the lovely Welsh countryside with a cup of tea and a slice could be the reason.

    1. Bara Brith literally means speckled bread, I just use my normal bread recipe and use dark brown sugar. I add a good shake of cinnamon, possibly 3 teaspoons for 2 medium loaves, and as much dried fruit as I can get the dough to hold, I add it with the water and when kneading just push any escapees back in. I then cook as normal, it makes a fairly spicy and quite fruity bread that is not too sweet.
