A whole Month...Really.

I heard a report on BBC Breakfast that says Tea Towels are responsible for many incidents of food poisoning. The presenter went on to say that several towels had been tested for bacteria after being in constant use for a month.
I would have thought that they were walking by then.
I only use mine once, after a baking session I can get through 4 in the clean up.

My mind was well and truly boggled.

Oh, wasn't it hot last night, I went off to bed but it was like an oven upstairs. I came down and both the dogs were huffing and puffing, we stayed down with the back door open for some cool air.
I may have dozed a bit but managed to read a whole book on the tablet.

The garden is looking much better, we have a couple of car loads to take to the recycling site today. The SO dug out the old holey wheelbarrow, it has had a hole mended and will get a coat or two of metal paint on its bottom today. later it will be planted up with some late bedding. Later on in the year I will put spring flowering bulbs in and then follow with Fuchsias and Geraniums.

The courgettes are looking good, as are the sugar snap peas. The heat sent the spinach into bolting mode but I have some more coming on.

The Strawberries are full  of fruit, the gooseberries and blackcurrants are full of promise and my Jostaberry is laden with fruit.

Time to get Ben and Herbie walked and fed, I am getting those looks.

  1. When I read the article in question on the tv, it seemed to say that the ONE towel was used for drying hands, drying dishes and wiping down surfaces. Disgusting ! Who are these people ? !!! Yuck !

    1. I was stopped in my tracks when I heard the presenter speak.

  2. A month?! The mind boggles. I change our tea towels about 3 or 4 times a week. And separate towel for hand drying, wouldn't dream of using a tea towel for that.

    1. I clear all the kitchen cloths at the end of the day and put new ones out every morning. On cooking days I can get through 3 sets.

  3. Morning Pam. Glad the garden looking up ours is too and the dog has grown a little since last year so he doesn't trample it as much. have a good week. I am laying floor insulation on Wednesday! Thanks for your lovely message. Funny. I didn't feel emotional writing the post but the comments so far have brought a tear to my eye. Jo x

    1. I am looking towards the day when Herbie does not feel the need to roll on every plant and have a good chew on them. It was a lovely post, not at all tear inducing for me. It brought back memories of my Dad working on all of our houses over the years.

  4. I still use about two or three dish towels each day despite having a dishwasher. Very hot wash and line dried if possible. Separate hand towels on hook near the sink. Bedding is another thing which is changed weekly and hot washed to kill any dust mites too. I also iron the dish towels as I once read that it is good for sterilising them after they are dry. Too hot again today so shopping done and home now.

    1. I hope that we are not in the minority but I know a few people who own 4 tea towels and think that is plenty.

  5. Pam, can you imagine the life of a tea towel, in our house they are always in the washing machine.

    1. Just like mine and most of my friends. When I had a house full I used to drop my kitchen cloths into a container of nappysan during the day. Last thing at night the washing machine would go on, it was the best way for me.

  6. Oh that is just completely gross. Who on earth uses a tea towel for a month without washing it? Made me feel quite sick. Mine are washed constantly after just one use.
Not loving this heat at all. It seems to have bought a plague of bluebottles with it and they are driving me crazy.

    1. There have been reports of swarms of flies everywhere, luckily so far we only have a few. Herbie tries his best to catch them. The feeling of "shock horror" is widespread on that subject. You could say the a can of worms has been opened.

  7. If you do a Food Hygiene Certificate they reckon everything should be dipped in very hot water and left to drain until dry ....which is fine if it's just a couple of things but the ddrainer would be a bit full for a family! I reckon a clean tea-towel each day should be about right

    1. It varies from house to house, how many people, how you cook, if you use a dishwasher. I just can not bare to see the drainer stacked up, even a couple of mugs make me uneasy.

  10. Coincidentally I have just read a report on this topic in the newspaper. Like you I was amazed/horrified at the thought of a tea towel being used for so many purposes in the kitchen - and for so long! I can only imagine they are folk who never had the year of "Domestic Science" in the First Year of Grammar School that I had - the first weeks were all about how to wash up, the correct order ( glasses first, all the way down to dirty roasting tins). Of course the correct use of tea towels, hand towels and dish cloths ( and their washing care) were also covered. Bring back Domestic Science I say!!!!

    1. Sounds just like my school days, my Granny was in service as a young woman and hammered correct kitchen hygiene into all of us.

  11. You do wonder sometimes! There's just me so one big wash of dishes a day - I use a dish towel for maybe 3 days but I also keep separate kitchen towels for my hands and another cloth for wiping the counter - and everything gets hung to dry each evening.
I saw another one of these articles recently where people only changed their sheets maybe once a month - if then! YUCK!

  12. Who the heck uses a tea towel for a month!!! I would hate to visit their house, after all the bath towels have probably been in use just as long.

    God bless.

  13. OMG, I'm speechless! Where do they find these people! Linda's comment brought back memories of Domestic Science at Grammar School, and lets not forget making the blue gingham bib apron and doing the cross stitch decoration along the bottom. After my mom died and we were sorting out her stuff I found that she had kept that apron, I couldn't believe it!!

    1. I made my apron in primary school, my name in cross stitch on the bib, 2 pockets with cross stitch and some more along the bottom hem. Mine just fell to pieces after around 20 years of hard work.

  14. you've taken me back! gosh i remember learning cross-stitch at school; i think it was napkins (can you imagine?!) we made and we used the squares in the gingham as our stitching guide! how funny!
