Slip one, Drop one.

Well, I seem to have lost a day. I was just getting into bed last night when I realised that I had not posted. Oh Dear, Never Mind.
I will make up for it today.

This is what I wore yesterday, made in 100% cotton, the style has almost become my "uniform" or what I have seen called "secret pyjamas" as it is so comfy and easy to wear.

This is my favourite print, the same style as yesterday but I decided to wear a belt today. I have lots more of the fabric and need to decide what pattern to use.

And now for something completely different.

Long Socks. BTW I totally failed on the toe up cast on. It will happen but I cast on a pair of scrappy socks for the SO as he was positively drooling over this pair.

These are for a friend and they need  a fitting before I start the leg shaping.

These are the next 3 colours ready to be used in no particular order.

Herbie is poised for action, I am not sure what is claiming his attention.

He is trying to persuade Ben to play, no chance. Ben has had his walk and breakfast and just wants to rest for a while.

It is knit and natter today and I am hoping that the promised rain does not happen. The mountain is wreathed with mist that shows no sign of dissipating. It is a touch cooler and there is not so much as a glimmer of sun shine so far.

I have been  watching Rip Off Britain and this morning they were talking about shopping bags. Some chap complained that he had to buy a separate carrier to put his raw meat in (this was Waitrose!). He was buying Fillet Steak and Salmon so I assume that he could afford the bag.
When I shop I use a clean me made cloth bag for raw meat (and would not put meat and fish together anyway) every time. That is pure common sense but as I have said so many times "that is as rare as Rocking Horse manure"
It used to be taught in school as Domestic Science or Home Economics or in my day Cookery Class.
Although my Granny had already instilled it into my head.

The program waffled on about food safety and the risk of cross contamination and I had to turn it off it was so preachy.
I see people throwing their shopping into bags, willy nilly every time that I shop. Some people will not learn because they simply have no interest. Mostly I think that it is the race against the clock that stops all conscious thought, the pressure is on to get it bagged, paid for and into the car as fast as possible.
That pressure comes from both supermarket and the never ending list of "things that Have to be done today" that many of us carry in our heads. That is not taking into account any children that are with Mum and adding pressure of their own.

You may have gathered that I do not like shopping, for anything. I see it as a necessary chore to be done as infrequently as possible.

No, I do not shop online. I am far too much of a control freak, I like to select my own food. I check sell by dates, freshness and size.

Why would I buy the smallest cabbage, cauliflower or broccoli when I can pick the largest  for the same price?

Off the soap box now, it is past time to dog walk and besides I need to "go", too much tea this morning.

  1. That is just the style of dress I like Pam. I have just taken an unfinished one out of my box (from two years ago) and tried it on with thoughts of finishing it but I think it's going to have to be a total remake job as it is so big on me now.

    1. hip hip hooray for weight loss. The SO and I have decided to follow the SW plan, I found all that I needed online. I am toying with the idea of making him the "Haribo" jelly sweets as he loves the real thing.

  2. Thanks for the post. Nice to know that I am not alone in hating to shop. Here in the U.S. hardly anyone uses their own bags but I would like to see that change. So much litter everywhere. Cheers joyce

    1. I have made my own bags for years, even the really strong plastic bags cut into my hands. I often put gifts into a bag of some sort rather than using wrapping paper.

  3. I just love the design of those dresses - and the fabrics look lovely. My kinda dress! Perfect for warm weather and I bet they'll look nice with a long sleeved tee-shirt underneath in the colder months. I'm with you on the shopping rant too!

    1. Yes, I do wear them over long sleeved tops and with thicker tights or leggings and boots. They are fully lined so are quite warm, unbelted they are perfect for hot weather as there is lots of movement.

    1. I do a big shop for tinned goods every few weeks and tend to stock up on cleaning stuffs and bathroom things at the same time. I like to do it during the week when the shops are less busy. Anything to make life easy.

    1. It will come, have you looked at Winwick Mum on Blogger, she has some excellent tutorials. I think that she has shown half the UK how to knit socks.

  6. In California you have to bring your own bags, or else pay 10¢ per bag for store ones. It doesn't happen in department or pharmacy's for RX med bags. We keep a stash of bags in each vehicle.
I love the dress and crazy socks are wonderful.

    1. It surprises me that there are still hedgerows festooned with discarded carrier bags, although there are far fewer than a few years ago. I have seen shoppers decanting prepacked vegetables and fruit into their own containers before leaving the stores.

  7. I like the dresses! I've always enjoyed wearing dresses, especially made like those. Looks cool and comfortable...and I would probably like it without the belt. Mama used to tell me to wear a belt. She loved a belt, with everything. :)

    1. I wear dresses and skirts for 99% of the time. When I worked I had to wear trousers and vowed that I would only wear them when absolutely essential once I retired.

  8. Lovely frocks, I always look for the largest, fullest or heaviest when I'm buying stuff!

    1. I see people just picking up the nearest item to hand without even glancing at size or quality. I am far too picky and cost conscious for that.

  9. Here in Queensland Australia at the end of June there will be NO plastic shopping bags given at shops, you will bring your own or have to buy an alternative.
Really it is just habit.....I have been making and taking my own for about 6 years, I keep a stash of 6 to 8 in the car, put them on the front seat until it becomes normal to grab them as you go into a shop, then they can be left in the back if that works with your family.
The local charity shop has pillowcases 6 for $1 so that is a very quick way to make sturdy bags, cut some strips from the top for handles and top stitch them, join to bag and turn inside out and box the bottom corners....done.

    1. Thank you for the tip, I have a few pillowcases that would make bags. My brother lives in Perth and they have always used their own bags.

  10. Love the dress Pam, it looks so cool for hot summer days. I've used my own cloth bags for years. I do have a few sort of vinyl type bags that I use for frozen foods and meat and fish. There are still a few grocery stores here that still use plastic bags with no charge. They are so wasteful, putting only one or two items in these bags.

    1. I have a few of the hessian bags but do not often use them for shopping, each one will hold a large knitting or sewing project. When I plan a project I like to get everything in one place and then when ready to start I just pick up the bag and am all set.

  11. I don't like shopping either, the crowds, the noise and the time it takes me away seem to be overwhelming some days.

I love the dress pattern. I can see it made out of many different materials for all kinds of weather. I love it with the belt.

    God bless.

  12. Lovely dresses. I hate all kinds of shopping, but it has to be done. If i'm paying full price I want the freshest (pick from the bottom of the back crate) and the largest. I like my money's worth. I do buy yellow stickers but again I check fro freshness or if it can go in the freezer.

    1. That is just how I shop, there have been times when the top crate of veg has been warm to the touch but dig down and there is cool fresh stuff.

  13. Love the dress and the idea of layering it as the weather is a tad unpredictable here. Like you I have been making my own bags for years.

    1. I have always liked layers, it is so easy to whip off a cardigan when the sun shines. Then on mornings that are a bit nippy, like today, I took off my cotton cardie and slipped on a wool jumper for dog walking.

  14. I wish I felt comfortable in a dress but I hate my legs now I am older so trousers it has to be. Your dress looks so comfy. Regards the bags and packing, I always pack meat and fish away from other foods but see others piling it all together in the same bag :/ I use a couple of sturdy canvas bags for heavy stuff and cotton (washable) for meat. I can't bring myself to use the bag you made me for shopping as I love it so much. It holds my knitting :) Now perhaps I need to try socks....

    1. I am not that keen on my legs, they are muscular from all the walking, but do not worry about it. I use my bags like yours for knitting.
